Acoustic Leak Detection for Remote Water Infrastructure in Western Australia
Commercial Leak Detection was called to investigate unexplained high water consumption at a facility along the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia.
The facility was experiencing significant water loss within its underground supply network, but the location of the leak was unknown. With a lengthy underground pipeline and no practical way to isolate individual sections, conventional isolation testing was not suitable.
Our team used specialist acoustic leak detection equipment to systematically investigate the underground water main and accurately pinpoint the concealed leak without unnecessary excavation.
Project Detail
The Challenge
Remote facilities can present unique challenges when investigating underground water leaks, particularly where pipelines extend across large areas with limited access to isolation valves.
At the Bibbulmun Track facility, the investigation involved:
Unexplained high water consumption
An extensive underground water supply network
Limited ability to isolate individual pipeline sections
A concealed leak with no confirmed location
Remote bushland conditions
The need to minimise unnecessary excavation and environmental disturbance
Without an accurate leak location, excavation along the pipeline would have been time-consuming and potentially disruptive to the surrounding environment.
Acoustic Leak Detection of the Underground Water Main
Because individual sections of the pipeline could not be isolated, Commercial Leak Detection used professional acoustic leak detection equipment to investigate the underground water main.
Acoustic leak detection works by identifying sounds and vibrations generated when pressurised water escapes through a damaged section of pipe.
Using specialist listening equipment, our technicians systematically surveyed the underground pipeline, checking for the characteristic sound associated with escaping water.
Despite the length of the water main and the remote location, the investigation successfully narrowed the search area and identified the precise location of the suspected leak.
This approach allowed the affected section to be located before excavation began.
Locating the Damaged 25mm Pressure Pipe
Following the acoustic investigation, the identified location was excavated to expose the underground water supply pipe.
Excavation confirmed a leak within a 25mm pressure pipe supplying the facility.
Because the leak had already been pinpointed using acoustic detection, excavation could be concentrated on the affected section rather than requiring extensive digging along the pipeline.
The damaged pipe was subsequently repaired, eliminating the unnecessary water loss.
Successful Project Outcome
The investigation achieved:
Accurate location of the concealed underground water leak
Successful acoustic investigation without pipeline isolation
Identification of the damaged 25mm pressure pipe
Targeted excavation at the leak location
Successful repair of the affected pipe
Elimination of the unexplained water loss
Reduced unnecessary disturbance to surrounding bushland
Restoration of the facility’s water supply integrity
Non-Invasive Leak Detection for Remote Facilities
This project demonstrates the value of non-invasive acoustic leak detection for remote facilities and extensive underground water networks.
Where pipelines cannot be easily isolated, acoustic detection can provide an effective alternative for locating concealed water leaks without excavating large sections of infrastructure.
Accurate leak location is particularly valuable for facilities situated within environmentally sensitive areas, where unnecessary excavation can disturb vegetation, soil and surrounding infrastructure.
By identifying the location of the fault before excavation, repair teams can concentrate their work on the affected section.
This project also demonstrates why commercial leak detection matters, particularly where concealed water loss affects essential infrastructure and unnecessary excavation could disturb environmentally sensitive surroundings.
