Commercial Leak Detection for a Remote Resort Water Supply
Commercial Leak Detection was called to Monkey Mia Resort in Western Australia after the resort experienced unusually high water demand from its desalination plant.
The increased consumption indicated that water was being lost somewhere within the resort’s underground network. With the desalination plant struggling to maintain the required supply, locating the hidden leak quickly was important to restore the efficiency of the site’s water infrastructure.
Our team mobilised to the remote location with specialist leak detection and pipe locating equipment to investigate the underground water main.
Project Detail
The Challenge
Remote commercial sites can present additional challenges when investigating underground water loss.
At Monkey Mia Resort, there was limited information immediately available about the exact location of the buried services. Before the leak itself could be investigated, the underground water main first needed to be identified and its route confirmed.
The investigation therefore required a systematic process to:
- Review the available underground service plans
- Establish the location of the buried water main
- Determine which section of the network was losing pressure
- Pinpoint the leak before excavation
- Minimise disruption to the operational resort
Because the site’s water supply relies on desalination, unnecessary water loss was also placing additional demand on the plant.
Locating the Underground Water Main
Commercial Leak Detection reviewed the available site plans before using specialist locating equipment to trace and confirm the position of the underground water main.
Establishing the pipeline route provided a defined area for further testing and avoided unnecessary investigation across unrelated sections of the resort.
Once the water main had been identified, our technicians could begin systematically testing the network to determine the affected section.
Pressure Testing and Leak Detection
Pressure testing was carried out to help identify the section of pipeline responsible for the water loss.
Once the investigation had narrowed the problem to the affected section, specialist leak detection equipment was used to determine the precise location of the leak.
The failed section of water main was successfully pinpointed adjacent to the resort’s services shed, providing a targeted location for excavation and repair.
Targeted Excavation and Repair
Accurately identifying the leak location before excavation meant the affected area could be accessed without unnecessary digging across the resort.
Following excavation, the failed water main was repaired and the pipeline was pressure tested again.
The repaired pipeline successfully held pressure, confirming the integrity of the system and allowing the resort’s water supply infrastructure to return to normal operation.
Successful Project Outcome
The investigation achieved:
- Accurate location of the underground water main
- Identification of the leaking section of pipeline
- Precise location of the concealed water leak
- Minimal and targeted excavation
- Successful repair of the failed main
- Successful post-repair pressure testing
- Reduced unnecessary demand on the desalination plant
- Restoration of normal water system operation
Remote Commercial Leak Detection in Western Australia
This project demonstrates why commercial leak detection matters in remote Western Australian locations, particularly where sites rely on their own water production or supply infrastructure. Hidden water loss can place additional pressure on critical systems such as pumps, treatment equipment and desalination plants while providing little indication of where the leak is actually located.
At facilities such as resorts, mining camps, industrial sites and remote commercial operations, an underground leak can result in substantial water loss while placing additional demand on pumps, treatment systems or desalination infrastructure.
Commercial Leak Detection provides specialist investigation of underground water mains, commercial pipelines and concealed water leaks throughout metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia.
Our capabilities include commercial water leak detection, underground pipe locating, pressure testing and specialist investigation of buried water infrastructure.
